Goodreads’ Description

Layken’s father died suddenly, leaving her to gather every ounce of strength to be a pillar for her family, in order to prevent their world from falling apart. Now her life is taking another unexpected turn…

Layken’s mother gets a job which leads to an unwanted move across the country. However, a new home means new neighbours… and Layken’s new neighbour is the very attractive Will Cooper.

Will has an intriguing passion for slam poetry, and a matching passion for life. The two feel an irresistible attraction but are rocked to the core when a shocking revelation brings their romance to a screeching halt. Layken and Will must find a way to fight the forces that threaten to tear them apart…or learn to live without each other.

My Thought

Surprisingly, this is such a hard book for me to rate. As I scrolled down the page of Slammed, I saw the reviewers I follow or my friends have showed many positive ratings over negatives. (Yes, I am easily influenced as you can see) Hence, this has a slight impact on my ratings.

I believe Colleen Hoover has the potentials to write something better, much better than Slammed. Again, the anticipation I have of this novel was great and it was on my can’t-wait-to-read shelf but in the end it didn’t meet my expectations.

Before I started reading Slammed…

Oh, I am going to have such a fun time reading this book! *Hugged the book* Look at the subtitle on the cover, “Tragedy and romance entwine in a fated love story”. Hmm, why does that sound like Romeo and Juliet? Well, I am sure this is much better than that! *big grin* *starts reading*

After I finished the book…

I slammed the book shut and massaged my temples. Why does Layken (or ‘Lake’) has to be such an immature brat? Right after she met Will, she loves Michigan and everything that goes with it. But when she realised life doesn’t always go her way she decides it is time to whinge like a baby. Again.

I hope Will is right about it being gone soon. I hate the snow. I hate Michigan.

Hoover tries to portray her as a tough girl who ‘gathers every ounce of strength to be a pillar of her family’ but she fails miserably. All along, it has never been Lake who tries to hold the family together. It has always been Julie! She’s the one who gives advice to Lake when she needs them. She’s the one who has turned into a nocturnal in order to earn money. She’s the one…**SPOILER ALERT!!!***…who has lung cancer…**SPOILER OVER!!!*** yet, she keeps the family running.

To me, Lake is just a childish 18-years old young adult who whinges all the time. Anyhow, with Lake, her circumstance should force her to grow up rather than allowing her to live inside her little bubble and continuously ‘craving pumpkins’. She should appreciate her mum even more after her dad’s incident. But nope! Being an awesome daughter Lake is, she eavesdrops her mum’s conversation and doesn’t even have any self-respect for herself as she breaks into her mum’s bedroom and disrespects her mum’s privacy. Then she whinges some more when she performed her first slam poetry in front of the class, in Will’s class. *Sigh* Lake is just a pathetic heroine who lacks of maturity.

facepalm

Though, I did like her better throughout the last half of the novel. She has finally grown some sense! Hooray!

Will Cooper…

“He laughs. I like his laugh. I hate that I like his laugh.”

Me: Will Cooper, you are too good for Lake.

Will: Oh, but she is so down-to-earth. *eyes sparkles*

Me: Snap out of it! All she does is cries and get you into trouble!

Will: But I love her. She is the cement that bounces all my pieces together. The piece that seals my puzzle. The piece that –

Me: Alright, shut up! This is not call love, Will. What you feel for her is purely out of sympathy! And she does not love you. She’s just infatuated with your mouth-drooling hotness! *starts drooling*

Will: *glares at me* Are you sure you’re not talking about yourself?

Me: Hehe… *run*

gosh

YES! Will Cooper is gorgeous alright! He is one of the swoon-worthy male characters I would ‘LOVE’ to marry in the future. (Oh, his delicate features…) Not just based on his features, but his personality has made a great example of what every guy should be like. Yes, he has made many mistakes in the past and even now (thanks to Lake -.-) but he learnt his mistakes…maybe not when it comes to Lake… but come on, who doesn’t like a gorgeous guy that reads and performs slam poetry? 😉 I know I do.

Oh, Kel & Caulder

One of the reasons why I didn’t throw this book out of the windows is because of Caulder and Kel. I love them so much! They are probably the two most adorable and cutest boys I have ever met through my 16 years of reading! (Not that I can read since I was born but you get me. 🙂 )Though what kind of annoyed me was the fact Kel has backwards day. Like, how can his mind processed fast enough to say what he wants to say backwards? Doesn’t that sound a bit incredulous? However, both of them are just so lovable that I decide to move pass that.

Eddie!

I swear, without the help of Eddie, Lake would probably be one of the worst heroine I have ever read in my life! Eddie is probably the weirdest yet the most mature and realistic girl I have ever met in my life. This is crazy, but if I have to choose a star sign that would suit her, it would probably best be Scorpio. She appears to me like a mysterious girl whom I would love to get to know about. Hmm, I don’t know how to describe her. But let’s say she is very distinctive throughout the entire novel, even if I compared her to other novels I have read. I would love her so much more if Hoover swaps her place with Lake’s in Slammed. However, I think Gavin is definitely her soul mate! 😀

The Plot

Furthermore, the plot of the book was a bit rush for me. By ‘rush’ I mean it seemed like Hoover was trying to get this novel published ASAP. When I thought a matter was interesting, she decided to rush it and went onto the next thing which would just happened again. This novel is lacking a few elements, mainly depths. I believe this book will develop to full potentials and even more if the author goes into detail (not too detailed that it makes whole village snores) but just enough for the readers to actually care for the characters.

I guess I shall read the sequel of this book: Point of Retreat in hope to read more of Kel and Caulder, Eddie and Gavin, and definitely more of Will Cooper!

*swooooooooooonnnn*

swoon

Have you read any of Colleen Hoover’s works? I read the first two novels of Never Never and I felt in love with it! ♥.♥

  1. Awesome and informative review, girl! I think I’ve read… four Colleen Hoover books and hated every single one thus far. o_o She’s just not my type of writer, I guess. One of the main reasons I dislike her books is because she seems to always have this wishy-washy heroine, and that seems to be the case with Slammed, too. I’m probably going to want to rip all of Lake’s hair off, and then some. I somehow feel like I’ll be in the minority and possibly hate Will, too. It’s just that I can’t deal with men who are okay with being with women who are obviously not in their level… If that makes any sense. ._.

    Whoops. Sorry for rambling!

    • Thank you Aimee! 😀 Fair enough, everyone’s taste is different hence why the blogosphere is never monotonous. I am ambivalent about her writings to be honest. But the suspension and mystery in Never Never got the best of me so I am going to wait and see what magical twist she’s going to pull. Yes, I love your description! She is always so emotional and moody too! 😛 I am sad to hear that you are not fond of Mr Cooper like I am…He’s probably unrealistic but a girl can wish.

Don’t ever be sorry, it’s my pleasure to have you commenting on my blog! ^-^

      Happy reading,
      Kristy.

  2. HI I am stalking your blog to see what I should do for your review ratings and your signature 😉

I love your conversation with Will omg, that’s hilarious! The female MC sounds very self-centred and righteous in an annoying way, though! Great review, I always love your conversational tone ❤

    • Haha if he does exist in real life I am probably going to stutter and blush, then stutter some more and run away because I am embarrassed/starstrucked. Yes, she is quite a nuisance that girl. But I have a great tolerance so reading the book was not a problem! 😉 Thank you! ^-^ But if I can write half as good as you then my life goal is achieved haha xD

  3. Your convo is so cute HAHAHAH! I love Colleen! I do agree that Layken was a bit immature at first but she does get better. Hope you give her other books a try specifically, Maybe Someday! That is my fav ❤
